At Monday’s meeting, the Stockton City Council approved a contract with Mathis Group to find the city’s next manager. This development was covered by Stockton publication The Record:
The City Council hired a headhunter Monday, taking its first critical step toward replacing City Manager Bob Deis, who will soon retire from the bankrupt city grappling with high crime.
Bill Mathis, a management psychologist based in Napa chosen to lead the national search, told the council he already knows a vital personality trait that Stockton needs in its next manager.
“You have to have a fire in your belly,” Mathis said. “You have to have more energy than most people possess.”
Stockton is the latest government agency seeking guidance from Dr. Mathis to find a strong leader with the ability to provide solutions and thrive under challenging circumstances. Water boards, police departments, school districts and city councils engage Mathis Group and Dr. Mathis for his expertise in executive search and recruiting.
