The search for Stockton’s next city manager is progressing. This morning, Dr. Mathis will present the six finalists to the City Council.

As many as 50 candidates were interviewed for the position the League of California Cities Annual Conference in Sacramento earlier this month. Four of these candidates will come to Stockton to meet the full City Council, with two additional candidates attending as well.

“This is a new chapter in the life of citizens in moving out of bankruptcy,” said Dr. Mathis. “Bob Deis has done the heavy lifting for the City in a speedy move out of bankruptcy and starting the City moving forward toward recovery and prosperity.”

When the Council narrows the search to two frontrunners, Mathis Group will proceed with the next portion of the selection process, which will likely include further interviewing and in-depth background checks.

In the final round of selection, Mayor Anthony Silva will nominates one or more candidates, with the City Council appointing the finalist before a contract is negotiated with the city attorney. The Council is expected to hire its city manager before outgoing manager Bob Deis retires November 1.
